Microsoft Edge Download Block
What is this?
When you download the Margin Master installer using Microsoft Edge, Windows may show a security warning that blocks or flags the file. This happens because Windows Defender SmartScreen checks every downloaded program against a reputation database — and since Margin Master is purpose-built for independent hardware retailers rather than the general public, it may not have accumulated enough download history to pass automatically.
This is not a virus. The warning is a Windows precaution shown for any software with a limited download footprint, regardless of whether it is safe. Margin Master is digitally signed by RetailerSoft and has been in active use by hardware retailers for years.
Two separate warnings can appear — one when Edge downloads the file, and another when you run it. Both are easy to get past.
Step 1: Get Past the Edge Download Warning
What you will see
After clicking the download link, Edge shows a warning in the downloads panel. Depending on your version of Edge, the message may read:
- "This file can't be downloaded safely"
- "[Filename] was blocked"
- The file appears with a shield icon, a warning badge, or a "Blocked" label
How to keep the file
- Open the Edge downloads panel — click the download icon in the top-right toolbar, or press Ctrl+J.
- Find the blocked file. It will have a warning icon or "Blocked" badge next to the file name.
- Click the three-dot menu (...) to the right of the file name.
- Click "Keep" from the dropdown.
- A confirmation dialog appears. Click "Keep anyway".
The file is now saved to your Downloads folder.
Tip: If no "Keep anyway" option appears, look for a "More info" or "Show more" link first — clicking it reveals the "Keep anyway" button.
Step 2: Get Past the Windows SmartScreen Warning
What you will see
When you double-click the downloaded installer, a blue dialog appears before anything installs:
Windows protected your PC "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk."
The dialog shows a "Don't run" button and a "More info" link at the top.
How to run the installer
- Click "More info" (the underlined text near the top of the dialog).
- The dialog expands to show the app name, publisher, and file origin.
- A "Run anyway" button appears at the bottom.
- Click "Run anyway".
The Margin Master installer launches normally.
Note: Windows may also show a User Account Control (UAC) prompt asking "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" Click "Yes" to continue. Administrator privileges are required to install Margin Master.
Why Does This Happen?
SmartScreen uses a crowdsourced reputation system. Software earns a "safe" rating by being downloaded and run on millions of computers without causing harm. Margin Master's audience is a focused vertical — independent hardware stores — so its install count is naturally smaller than mass-market software, even though it has been in production for years.
The warning does not mean the file is dangerous. It means Windows has not yet accumulated enough download data from enough different computers to assign it an automatic pass.
Common Questions
Q: Is it safe to click "Keep anyway" and "Run anyway"? A: Yes. Margin Master is digitally signed by RetailerSoft. These dialogs are a precaution Windows applies to any software that hasn't been downloaded by tens of thousands of users — not an indication that something is wrong.
Q: Will I see this every time I update Margin Master? A: No. Margin Master's built-in auto-update system downloads and installs updates silently inside the application itself. You will only encounter these Edge and SmartScreen prompts when manually downloading the full installer — for example, during a fresh install on a new computer.
Q: My IT department is blocking the download entirely and there is no "Keep" option. A: Your organization's security policy may be stripping the option to override the block. Your IT administrator will need to whitelist the Margin Master download URL or the installer's publisher certificate. Contact Margin Master support and we can provide the certificate details and download URL for your IT team.
Q: The SmartScreen dialog only shows "Don't run" — there is no "More info" link. A: On some Windows configurations the link is very small or positioned differently. If you cannot find it, try this alternative: right-click the installer file in Windows Explorer, choose Properties, and look for an "Unblock" checkbox at the bottom of the General tab. Check it, click OK, then double-click the installer again.
Q: The installer shows "Unknown publisher" in the SmartScreen dialog. A: This can happen in the first few hours after a new version is published, before the reputation database updates. If you received the download link directly from Margin Master support, it is safe to proceed.
