CounterWorks POS Import
What is this?
CounterWorks is a point-of-sale system for hardware and building supply retailers. Margin Master imports CounterWorks CSV exports to build pricing analysis tables. CounterWorks is unique in that it provides monthly margin percentages instead of standard unit sales history.
Import File Format
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Delimiter | Comma (,) |
| File pattern | *.csv |
| Header row | Yes (1 row) |
| Total fields | 17 |
How Import Works

The export file is read from the Import Path set under Tools > Options > Miscellaneous:

- Export your data from CounterWorks as a
.csvfile. - Place the file in the configured import folder.
- Margin Master reads the file, validates the fields, and stages the data using BCP (Bulk Copy Program).
- The staged data is finalized and inserted into the
[Store]table. - Margin Master joins the store data with vendor catalog data to build your main pricing analysis table.
Field Mapping
| CounterWorks Field | Margin Master Field | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| STORE | Store | Store identifier |
| SKU | SKU | Product identifier |
| LINCODE | Dept | Line code maps to Department |
| SUBLINE | Class | Subline maps to Class |
| DESCR | Description | Product description |
| COST | Cost | Product cost |
| PRCB | CurrentPrice | Base price maps to current retail price |
| QOH | OnHand | Quantity on hand |
| MULT | OrderMultipleSKU | SKU-level order multiple |
| ORDQTY | OrderMultiple | Order quantity multiple |
| DM00 | History1 | Month 1 margin percentage |
| DM01 | History2 | Month 2 margin percentage |
| DM02 | History3 | Month 3 margin percentage |
| DM03 | History4 | Month 4 margin percentage |
| DM04 | History5 | Month 5 margin percentage |
| DM05–DM11 | History6–History12 | Months 6–12 margin percentages |
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Files Found when you choose Get POS Data | The export is not in the Import Path (Tools > Options > Miscellaneous), or its name does not match the pattern above | Check the path and the file name; Margin Master reads only the current folder, not sub-folders |
| The same file is imported again and again | The previous import's file was not renamed | After a successful import the file is renamed to NAME[ext].BAK; a file that keeps its name did not import - read the error dialog |
| 0 records or far fewer than expected | The export covers the wrong store, or the store is not matched in the Store Manager | Open Store Manager and check the store's row; re-export from the point of sale |
| Columns land in the wrong fields | The export layout changed | Compare the file's header row with Field Mapping above; contact Margin Master support with the file |
| Import finishes but the grid does not change | The rebuild was postponed (the Click to update data badge is showing) | Click the badge, or Data > Rebuild Data |
Every import failure shows one error dialog; the log under File > Utilities > Show Log Files has the detail to send to support.
Tips
- Margin columns, not sales units: Unlike most POS systems that export unit sales counts for history, CounterWorks exports margin percentages (DM00 through DM11). These are mapped to the History1 through History12 fields in Margin Master.
- LINCODE and SUBLINE: CounterWorks uses
LINCODEfor department andSUBLINEfor class. These are standard CounterWorks field names that map directly to Margin Master'sDeptandClassfields. - Two order multiple fields:
MULTmaps to the SKU-level order multiple, whileORDQTYmaps to the standard order multiple.
Common Questions
Q: Why does my history data look different from other POS systems? A: CounterWorks exports margin percentages rather than unit sales counts. The values in your History columns represent monthly margin percentages, not the number of items sold.
Q: What is the difference between MULT and ORDQTY?
A: MULT is the SKU-level order multiple (how the product is packaged), while ORDQTY is the standard order quantity multiple used for reordering.
