Wildcard Selection Filters

What is this?

Selection boxes throughout Margin Master -- in the pricing analysis view, strategy step editor, and other areas -- support a wildcard filter that lets you match items by pattern instead of selecting them one at a time.

This is useful when you want to target a range of values (e.g., all product groups starting with HW, or all vendor numbers containing 1234) without manually checking dozens of individual items.

Where it appears

The Wildcard row in a selection box

The *Wildcard* entry appears near the top of any selection box that has more than 5 items. It sits just below the *All* row.

How to use it

Including items by pattern (left-click)

  1. Left-click the checkbox next to *Wildcard* to select it (checkbox turns solid).
  2. A text box appears below the list. Type your pattern using * as the wildcard character.
  3. Any previously selected items are automatically deselected -- wildcard is mutually exclusive with individual selections.

Example: Type HW* to include all product groups that start with HW.

Excluding items by pattern (right-click)

  1. Right-click the checkbox next to *Wildcard* to set it to exclude mode (checkbox shows a strikethrough).
  2. A text box appears. Type your pattern.

Example: Type *DISC* to exclude all values containing DISC.

Pattern syntax

The * character matches any sequence of characters (including none).

Pattern Matches
A* Anything starting with A
*TOOL* Anything containing TOOL
*0012 Anything ending with 0012
HW* Anything starting with HW
* Everything (matches all values)

Patterns are case-insensitive.

Notes

  • Wildcard and individual item selections are mutually exclusive. Selecting *Wildcard* clears any individually checked items, and checking an individual item clears the wildcard.
  • The default pattern when you first activate the wildcard is * (matches everything). Replace it with your specific pattern.
  • Wildcard filters work with both include (left-click) and exclude (right-click) modes, the same as individual item selections.
