Grid Features You Get for Free

What is this?

The Results grid is a full-featured data grid, and several everyday things - sorting, filtering, sizing and re-ordering columns, searching across the whole grid - are done directly in it rather than through a dialog. This page lists what works, what is deliberately switched off, and which changes Margin Master remembers.

Sorting by clicking a header

  • Click a column header to sort ascending; click again for descending. The grid scrolls back to the top after a sort.
  • Shift+click further headers to sort by more than one column; small numbers on the headers show the sort order.
  • For a sort you want to keep, use Edit Sort Order on the button row instead - it saves the fields and up to six presets (Edit Sort Sequence). A header-click sort is temporary: it is not saved, and the next refresh returns to the saved sort order.

Filtering a column

Hover a column header and click the funnel to filter by the values in that column - tick the ones to keep, or use the text filter. An active filter appears in a filter panel at the bottom of the grid, where it can be cleared.

Column filters are quick, on-screen narrowing of the rows already loaded. For anything you will reuse, the selection boxes are the right tool: they are saved with a selection, drive the summary and the strategy, and are built for exactly this - see Chapter 13.

The typed filter row and the filter editor are switched off on purpose; the selection panel does that job better for pricing data.

Sizing and re-ordering columns

  • Drag a header's right edge to resize it; double-click the edge to best-fit the column to its contents.
  • Drag a header left or right to move the column.
  • View > Reset Columns puts every width back to its default.

These changes are remembered. Width and position changes are written to the current column view as you make them - there is nothing to save. The next time you start Margin Master, or switch back to that view, the columns are where you left them. Which columns are in the view, and their names, are set in Edit Columns and Field Manager.

Searching across the grid

The grid has a search panel that matches text in every visible column at once - handy for a word in a description or a vendor name. Right-click any column header and choose Show Search Panel, then type. (Ctrl+F opens Finding SKUs instead, which searches the whole database, not just the loaded rows.)

Grouping

Grouping rows by a column (drag-to-group) is normally off; when a saved selection or support turns the group panel on, the grid shows a Total Last 12 is N subtotal for each group. Store-level and group-level totals are the Summary panel's job - see The Summary Section.

Right-click on a row

Copy Sku # to Clipboard, Show Sku Detail, Add Sku to Custom Group, Delete Sku - see The Main Data Grid.

Tips

If the columns look wrong after a change, View > Reset Columns first, then re-open Edit Columns - the saved view may simply be a different one from the one you expect.

Header-click sorts are for a quick look; put anything you use daily into a sort preset.

Common Questions

Q: I re-ordered columns and they came back in the old order. A: Changes save to the column view that was current at the time. Check which view is selected in Edit Columns; each view keeps its own layout.

Q: The column chooser is missing from the header menu. A: It is removed on purpose - Edit Columns Displayed (View menu or the button row) is where columns are added and removed, so the view stays consistent.

Q: Can I filter and then run a strategy on the filtered rows? A: A header filter only narrows the display; a strategy works from selections. Use the selection boxes (or Save Current Selection) for anything a strategy should act on.
