Edit Columns

What is this?

Edit Columns controls which columns are visible in the main data grid and in what order they appear. You can create multiple named column views and switch between them to see different sets of data columns.

Walk through it in the app: lesson 1019 — When your columns change or disappear. Margin Master can walk you through these steps live: turn on Training / Guide Mode from the Help menu, then type 1019 into the Lessons & Guides box — or ask Margin Master support to run it with you.

How to Access

  • Menu: View > Edit Columns

Select View (Top)

Element Purpose
Hamburger menu Copy Current View, Create New View, Delete Current View
View Name dropdown Switch between saved column views
Lock icon Shown for default views (read-only)

Column Grid (Center)

The grid lists every available field in two sections:

Section Description
Visible columns (top) Checked fields, shown in your configured order
Hidden columns (bottom) Unchecked fields, sorted alphabetically

Each row has three columns:

Column Editable Purpose
Field Name No Internal field identifier
Display Name No Human-readable label (reflects Field Manager customizations)
Column Visible Yes Checkbox to show or hide the column in the main grid

Sequence Arrows (Right)

Use the up/down arrow buttons on the right side to reorder visible columns. Moving a hidden column up promotes it to visible.

Type in the search box above the grid to filter fields by name.

Save / Cancel (Bottom)

Click Save to apply your changes, or Cancel to discard them. If you have unsaved changes and click Cancel or close the window, you will be prompted to save.

Working with Column Views

Default Views

Each vendor type comes with a pre-configured default column view. Default views are read-only -- you cannot change which columns are visible or their order. A lock icon appears next to the view name.

Creating a New View

Click the hamburger menu and choose one of:

  • Copy Current View -- creates a copy of the selected view with all its columns and order preserved. You will be prompted for a name.
  • Create New View -- creates a blank view with no columns selected. You will be prompted for a name.

Editing a View

  1. Select your custom view from the View Name dropdown.
  2. Check or uncheck the Column Visible checkbox for each field.
  3. Use the up/down arrows to reorder visible columns.
  4. Click Save.

Deleting a View

Click the hamburger menu and choose Delete Current View. Default views cannot be deleted. If you delete the active view, the application switches to the first remaining view.

Tips

  • Use Copy Current View to start from a default view and customize it, rather than building a view from scratch.
  • The sequence arrows only affect visible columns. Hidden columns are always sorted alphabetically.
  • Column views work together with Field Manager customizations -- if you rename a field in Field Manager, the new name appears in the Display Name column here.
  • Use View > Reset Columns in the main menu to reload the current column view, restoring the stored sequence and widths.

Common Questions

Q: Why can't I check or uncheck columns? A: You have a default view selected (indicated by the lock icon). Copy the view first to create an editable version.

Q: I rearranged columns by dragging in the main grid. Does that save automatically? A: No. Dragging columns in the main grid is temporary. To permanently change column order, use Edit Columns and save the view.

Q: What does "Reset Columns" do vs. Edit Columns? A: Reset Columns (View > Reset Columns) reloads the current view's stored column sequence, widths, and visibility. Edit Columns lets you change which columns are in the view and their permanent order.

Q: Can I have different column views for different stores? A: Column views are saved per database. If multiple stores share the same database, they share the same column views.
